Mini Poll Results

Here are the results from the little poll I had running during the last 2 weeks.

I find that I tend to very frequently make Italian dishes, to the exclusion of other types of food. I wonder if others do the same. Maybe a good way to ask this would be to list a few different styles of cooking (maybe with canonical recipes) and have people select the ones that they frequently make. I wonder how often people would choose many different types.

I've noticed you have a knack for creating dishes that look incredibly foreign to me. What if you listed some exotic or under appreciated ingredients for people to weigh in on, then in a follow up post, relate some recipes with the 'winning' results as a main theme?

andrea, i like the idea of the exotic ingredients a lot with follow-up recipes.
let's see... gobo? rhubarb? ginseng? ...

and yes, tommy, italian always is a favorite! my personal opinion probably rates the italian kitchen as the number 1. quite simple to prepare with wonderful flavor. it's all about good quality ingredients. not to forget the best espresso in the world!

i'll save both those ideas for future polls.

People cook with ginseng!?

Ive only ever had it in smoothies or tea!
Are you for serious? Does it taste good?!

there's a few (mainly asian) recipes that use ginseng. I'm currently "marinating" a ginseng root a friend brought me from korea in japanese shouchu (a distilled spirit) together with ginger roots.

according to the japanese recipe, i'm also supposed to add chinese dates which i haven't found in any market yet. this will sit in a glass bottle for about 6 months until it's ready...

there's also stir-fry recipes, or you can juice the roots or grind them into tea... it has a quite unique, bitterish flavor. i'm still experimenting with ginseng. i'll let everybody know when i know more.

i've been at a chocolate truffle presentation last weekend at surfas and i'm tempted to use some ginseng for the filling! hmmmmm ;-)

gobo is a root. check my latest post (orange roughy) for an example recipe.

"gobo" is one of the most nutritious and popular vegetables in japan. we have many different kinds of dishes that we cannot cook without it..

hi dan,
I stumbled upon your site through kazu's. gosh, thank god for this. I love your step by step pictoral instruction :)
I cook italian food a lot as I have been influenced mostly by food network, plus it's easier to get the ingredients. japanese food tends to be more expensive and methodical for me, thus intimidating to try, hehe... nevertheless,.. with enough yummy pictures from this site, that'll be on my next list.
